No question: the year-round Santa Monica sunshine is one of the best parts of living here. But between the constant UV exposure and the activities that tend to accompany it (think: floating in chlorinated pools, surfing through saltwater), your hair is particularly prone to damage. To prevent your standard split ends from escalating into something more drastic, try these Séchoir-approved products and tips for restoring your hair health in no time.
It’s no secret that eating well can improve your health—but you might not have realized that it also extends to your hair health, too. Maintain a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are most commonly found in fish including salmon and sardines (or flax and chia seeds, for the vegetarians among us). Make sure to get lots of protein—crucial for forming and maintaining strong hair—from healthy sources like Greek yogurt and lean white meat. And of course, load up on delicious fresh produce, which is full of crucial vitamins and minerals. We’re lucky to have plenty of it in southern California!
Many shampoos contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a detergent and foaming agent that is also used on heavy machinery (read: not hair-friendly). Fortunately, in place of SLS, Aveda uses gentle plant-based foaming ingredients that are much easier on tired tresses. Try Damage Remedy Restructuring Shampoo for an extra dose of reparative care.
When your heart rate rises due to to exercise, it accelerates the delivery of oxygen, vitamins and minerals to all parts of your body—scalp included. Start by aiming to get at least 30 minutes of exercise three times per week. In addition to enhanced blood flow, you’ll experience reduced stress—and reduce the stress-induced hair loss that comes along with it.
You don’t need to shampoo your hair every day—and in fact, doing so can strip hair of the natural oils that help protect your strands and keep them nourished. If you feel greasy after skipping the suds, use Shampure Dry Shampoo to absorb excess oil between washes.
SKIP HEAT STYLING
The more you’re able to skip the blow dryer and let your tresses air-dry, the happier they’ll be. We swear by Aveda Smooth Infusion Nourishing Cream, which contains nourishing cupuacu and shea butters to heal hair and fight frizz (no blow dryer or flat iron required). And when you do bust out the styling tools, be sure to use a heat protectant. Your damaged hair will thank you.
TEND TO SPLIT ENDS
The tips of your strands are the oldest part of the hair, which is why they’re so prone to fraying and splitting. While trims are the only true cure for split ends (nothing can permanently fuse an already split strand) Aveda just launched Damage Remedy Split End Repair, which instantly repairs split ends through your next wash (and helps prevent new ones from forming).
Commit to a weekly hair masque formulated to suit your unique needs.
