THE DRY HAIR DILEMMA

Dry hair is the worst—but it’s something most of us deal with at some point or another. Whether you you’re finding it brittle and hard to style or just feel that it’s lacking that overall run-your-fingers-through-it vibe, there are plenty of steps you can take to prevent and combat dry hair. Ahead, a few of our go-to tips and tricks.

CHECK YOUR PROTEIN INTAKE

In your conditioner, at least. Many fortifying conditioners are formulated with protein to help rebuild damaged strands. They’re effective, but they can make hair hard and inelastic—which isn’t conducive to your soft hair mission. We recommend alternating between a protein-heavy conditioner and one that’s formulated with nourishing plant oils, like Aveda Smooth Infusion Conditioner, which softens and smooths with an exclusive blend of organic aloe, maize and guar bean.

COMMIT TO REGULAR TLC

To maximize the effects of your conditioning regimen, make a weekly appointment with a hair mask. Though most are too intensive for daily use, a regular dose of serious nourishment will leave your hair soft, shiny and manageable. We’re loving Dry Remedy Moisturizing Masque, which boasts a patented deep-moisture complex featuring buriti oil. And if you’re spending lots of time on the Santa Monica shore or the slopes (sunlight at high altitudes = extra harsh), try Sun Care After Sun Masque, which is specifically formulated to treat sun-exposed hair.

TRY A NEW STYLING PRODUCT

Many are formulated with additional moisturizing ingredients—like Brilliant Universal Styling Creme, which both seals in moisture and creates definition. Or try Smooth Infusion Nourishing Styling Creme, which smooths and nourishes even if you only air dry. Because the more breaks you can give parched hair from the blow dryer, the better.

SKIP THE SHAMPOO

When it comes to hair, squeaky clean isn’t always a good thing. Your hair has natural oils that it needs to stay lustrous and healthy, and even moisturizing shampoos can strip them away when used in excess. To prevent dryness, wash your hair no more than every other day, and use Shampure Dry Shampoo to refresh in between.
