Perfect beach waves might be the holy grail of hairstyles. Years of gracing red carpets and runways (including , notably, the one at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show) have not dulled but heightened their appeal, and they’re just as appropriate at a casual brunch as they are when paired with eveningwear. Perhaps best of all, Santa Monica’s beachside setting means they’re not at all off limits during winter months.

Read on for some of our favorite, tried and true methods for creating the kind of salty, tousled texture that could make the Angels jealous. Well, maybe.

1. THE OVERNIGHT
There are few things better than a style that can earn you some precious extra moments of shut-eye in the AM. This technique adds almost no time to your morning routine and results in a perfectly tousled day-to-night style.

Before bed, divide dry hair into 2-3 sections. Twist each section into a tight coil, and then, using a fabric hair tie or pin, secure in a bun. (Yes—à la Leia.) You want it tight enough that it won’t fall out during the night, but not so tight that you’re left with unwanted creases or kinks.

In the morning, release your hair and gently brush through it. Things will appear slightly puffy at this point, but don’t panic—just use a few drops of Aveda Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil or a light texturizing product to soothe frizz and coax your hair into an easy twist.

2. THE MIX & MATCH
Layering products, when done correctly, can be a surprisingly effective way to emulate the volume and grittiness that comes from a day spent in the sun and saltwater.

Personally, we love the combo of a texturizer like Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion or Aveda Shampure Dry Shampoo and a lightweight wax or pomade (try Light Elements Defining Whip) to add smoothness. You can also try mixing your favorite salt spray with mousse to achieve a sun-drenched, windswept look—no ocean necessary.

3. THE DAY TO NIGHT
This one’s for those of you who need to switch up your look post-office, pre-happy hour—or just have a day to kill. Style cannot be rushed, after all.

In the morning, run a lightweight styling product through your hair or spritz minimally with a light-hold hairspray. (Hello, Aveda Air Control.) Pull hair into a high ponytail and wrap around a soft bun ring.

(Tip: When you put your hair into the bun, make sure it’s completely dry. And if you blew it dry, let it cool before styling. Any extra heat or dampness can cause your curls to leave the realm of softly beachy and end up somewhere closer to 80s perm gone wrong.)

Rock the ballerina chic look for daytime. When night rolls around, let your hair down (literally). You’ll be greeted with effortless, soft waves—and the added bonus of extra volume at the roots.

4. THE GETAWAY
Book a flight. California beaches (and beach waves) are lovely—but they’re even better in the Caribbean.
